03-20-01
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va.. - Senior Marc
Fisher (Conshohoken,
Pa./Plymouth-Whitemarsh) hurled 8 1/3
strong innings and junior shortstop
Joshua Arteaga (Homestead, Fla./Motlow
State CC)drove in four runs to power
Virginia Commonwealth to an 8-2 road
victory over in-state rival Virginia in
baseball Tuesday afternoon.
The Rams, ranked 30th in the latest
Collegiate Baseball Division I poll, won
for the 15th straight time and improved
to 19-5 overall behind an outstanding
performance on the hill from Fisher
(3-1). The right hander scattered six
hits and struck out seven Cavalier
hitters and became the first pitcher in
VCU history to record 30 career wins.
UVa (13-9) jumped out to a 1-0 lead in
the bottom of the first inning when
junior Dan Street's bases-loaded
sacrifice fly plated second baseman Rob
Newton, but the Rams answered with four
second-inning runs off Cavaliers'
freshman Canon Hickman (1-2). Senior
catcher Cory Bauswell (Chesapeake,
Va./Western Branch) opened the frame with
a double, and sophomore third baseman
Robbie Gragnani (Richmond, Va./Mills
Godwin) followed with a bunt single to
put runners on the corners. Sophomore
right fielder Jose Pabon (Woodbridge,
Va./Potomac) then singled home Bauswell
to tie the game, and junior second
baseman Chris Gerrity (Midlothian,
Va./Midlothian)laced a double down the
third base line three batters later for a
3-1 VCU advantage.
Arteaga gave the Rams a 5-2 lead in the
sixth when he scored Gragnani on a
sacrifice fly, and highlighted a
three-run eighth inning for VCU with a
two-run double to right center.
VCU will begin its Colonial Athletic
Association schedule this weekend when
the Rams travel to North
Carolina-Wilmington for an important
three-game series beginning Friday at 7
