BASEBALL SHUTS OUT VMI, 7-0

RICHMOND, Va.. ˆ  Junior Doug Estep (Mansfield, Ohio/Lurleen B. Wallace JC) hurled eight scoreless innings as Virginia Commonwealth posted its first shutout of the season in a 7-0 victory over Virginia Military Institute in baseball Tuesday afternoon at The Diamond.

Estep (2-0) walked just one Keydet batter and struck out a career-high eight to lead the Rams (12-5) to their eighth straight victory on the season. VCU was led offensively by senior Cory Bauswell (Chesapeake, Va./Western Branch), who went three-for-three and drove in a pair of runs, while junior center fielder Matt Davis (Colonial Heights, Va./Thomas Dale) collected two hits and scored three times in the win.

The Rams broke the game open with three runs off VMI freshman Josh Owens (0-4) in the bottom of the first inning. Davis singled to lead off the frame, stole second, and later scored on an Owens wild pitch, and junior shortstop Joshua Arteaga (Homestead, Fla./Motlow State CC) made it 2-0 when he came home on a passed ball by Keydets‚ catcher Justin Briggs. Bauswell closed out the scoring when he plated sophomore first baseman Danny Lopaze (Lakeridge, Va./Potomac)with a base hit to right field.

VCU an unearned run in the second inning and twice more in the third to go up 6-0. Lopaze opened the third with a single off VMI southpaw John Sloan and advanced to second on a walk by sophomore third baseman Robbie Gragnani (Richmond, Va./Mills Godwin). Bauswell followed with a single to score Lopaze for the Rams‚ fifth run, and Gragnani came home on a sacrifice fly by sophomore catcher Jose Pabon (Woodbridge, Va./Potomac)to extend the lead to six runs.

Chris Cantazaro led the Keydets, who suffered their ninth straight loss and fell to 2-14 on the year, with two hits in four at-bats.

VCU will again play at home tomorrow afternoon when the Rams host 25th-ranked Wake Forest at The Diamond. Game time is 2 p.m. and can be heard live on the VCU athletics web site (www.vcu.edu/vcurams).
