Tim Haynes was added to the full time staff this season as he begins his fifth tour of duty with the Virginia Commonwealth baseball staff. He joined VCU after wrapping up a successful high school coaching career in Southeast Virginia.
Haynes also worked as a VCU assistant for the 1992 and 1993 seasons and helped the Rams to one of the program’s most successful and memorable seasons. VCU captured the 1992 Metro Conference regular-season title and a berth in the NCAA Central Regional in Austin, Texas, where the Rams advanced to the championship game and fell one game short of reaching the College World Series. The 1992 VCU squad also finished the year ranked 22nd nationally.
Haynes spent the past 25 years as a physical education teacher at Dinwiddie County High School before retiring following the 2001-02 school year and served 19 seasons as the school’s head baseball coach, where he built the Dinwiddie program into one of the most successful in the Richmond area. Haynes, who also previously held the role as Dinwiddie’s Athletic Director, led the baseball team to a national ranking by USA Today in 1990 and 1991 and has had a number of former pupils, including former major-leaguers Curtis Wilkerson and James Austin, go on to play professionally.
A native of Washington, D.C., Haynes earned a degree in physical education from Towson University in 1972 and played two years on the Tigers’ baseball team.
