BERKELEY, Calif. – Virginia Commonwealth dropped a 3-0 collegiate field hockey decision to #15 California-Berkeley Friday evening at Maxwell Family Field, snapping the Rams’ six-game win streak and halting the squad’s program-best start. With the loss, VCU drops to 6-2 on the season, while the nationally-ranked Golden Bears improve to 9-3 overall.
The host school jumped out to an early advantage, as forward Valentia Godfrid scored the only goal California would need just over 15 minutes into the match, handing the Rams their first loss since a season-opening defeat at Lafayette (3-2), Aug. 28.
The Golden Bears would tally another goal just before the intermission and add their third goal of the match in the second session to complete the 3-0 shutout of the visiting Rams.
Junior goalkeeper Becca Leuzzi (Virginia Beach, Va./Ocean Lakes), who had previously only surrendered five goals on the season, went the distance between the pipes, while making seven saves.
Despite being 4-1 when receiving fewer corners than its opponents, Virginia Commonwealth secured seven corners as opposed to California’s 10. The Bears also outshot the Rams 21-7.
Virginia Commonwealth will conclude its California trip Sunday afternoon, as the Rams take on the University of the Pacific at 4 p.m. (eastern standard time) on the campus of Cal.-Berkeley
