RICHMOND, Va. – Sophomore forward Nikki Lloyd (Kent, England/Bromley) recorded two goals to lead Virginia Commonwealth University (4-13, 2-4) to a 3-1 victory over Towson University (9-8, 2-4) Sunday afternoon at Cary Street Field.

After a back and forth battle to open the match, junior Emily Guerra (Yorktown, Va./Seton Hall) found a way to find the back of the net and give the Rams a 1-0 advantage. Guerra, who has been on a recent tear scoring four goals in the last five contests, emerged with the ball from a cluster of players and sent a shot through the Towson defense.

Just over six minutes later, Lloyd tallied her seventh goal of the season when she fired a bullet passed a diving Tiger goalie, giving VCU a 2-0 lead.

For the remainder of the first period, the Ram defense paved the way. VCU withstood eight first-half penalty corners to hold Towson scoreless and ride a two-goal cushion into the break.

The Tigers rebounded quickly, however, trimming the deficit in half just 4:55 into the second period when Laura Schnell scored on a penalty stroke.

Twenty minutes later Towson’s comeback hopes ended when Lloyd notched her second goal of the match and her eighth of the season. The sophomore forward used assists from freshmen Rebecca Sullivan (Fredericksburg, Va./Stafford) and Emilie Osinga (Aerdenhout, Netherlands/Stedelijk Gymnasium, Haarlem) to score a penalty corner goal and give the Rams a 3-1 advantage.

Today’s match was the final home contests for seniors Amanda Kelly (Chesapeake, Va./ Great Bridge), Ashley Cadwallader (Farifax, Va./Fairfax) and Alyssa Collis (Kaleden, British Columbia/Penticton Secondary) who have anchored the Ram defense for the past several years. Cadwallader was a second-team all-conference selection in 2005 while Collis is currently tied for the league lead in defensive saves with four.

The Rams return to action Friday, October 27 when they travel to Boston, Mass to take on Northeastern at 2 p.m.
