STORRS , Conn. - Freshman Emilie Osinga (Aerdenhout, Netherlands/Stedelijk Gymnasium, Haarlem) and junior Ashley Cadwallader (Fairfax, Va./Fairfax) (pictured) each had two goals Sunday to lead Virginia Commonwealth University to a 7-3 victory over Monmouth at the UConn Huskies Classic.
With Monmouth leading 1-0 in the first period, Osinga scored two goals in a span of 2:39 to give the Rams a 2-1 lead. Freshman Vicky Smith (Rumson, N.J./Rumson-Fair Haven) notched her first collegiate assist on Osinga’s second goal. Junior Jenna Harris (Aurora, Colo./Smoky Hill) also assisted on Osinga's second tally.
Seven minutes later Monmouth’s Annie Welsh served up her first goal of the season to pull the Hawks even with the Rams at 2-2.
The Rams quickly regained the lead when Harris redirected a pass from freshman Rachel Krumm (Norfolk, Va./ Granby) into the back of the net.
Sophomore Nikki Lloyd (Kent, England/Bromley) added an unassisted goal just before the half to give VCU a 4-2 lead at the break.
Barely into the second period, Cadwallader added her first goal of the afternoon to put the match officially out of reach for the Hawks. The junior forward also scored the final goal of the day for VCU; both goals were unassisted.
Krumm sandwiched her first collegiate goal between Cadwallader’s two.
The Rams return to action Friday, September 1, when they travel to New Haven, Conn. to face Yale at 3 p.m.
