RICHMOND, Va. – Virginia Commonwealth University (1-4) out shot Rider University (2-2) 7-5 in the first half, but fell 4-0 after a furious second-half attack by the Broncs that led to four unanswered goals.

In a match that began as a defensive struggle, the two teams played their way to a 0-0 tie at the break. The Rams had three shots on goal in the first frame, but all were turned away by the Broncs goalie.

Rider broke through offensively at the 29:28 mark in the second period when Tricia Crotty netted her first of two goals. Five minutes later Meaghan Schweers posted back to back goals within a span of 43 seconds to give the Broncs a 3-0 lead and put the match out of reach.

Senior Alyssa Collis ( Kaleden, British Columbia/ Penticton Secondary) (pictured) and sophomore Alaina Vernetti ( Fredericksburg, Va./Massaponax) each charted defensive saves in the second period.

Junior goalkeeper Brittany LoVullo (Williamsville, N.Y./Williamsville North) posted four saves in just 23 minutes of action.

The Rams return to the field Friday, September 15 when they take on the University of Virginia at 7 p.m. in Charlottesville.
