CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Virginia Commonwealth University (1-5) held a 1-0 halftime lead over the tenth-ranked Virginia Cavaliers (5-1) Friday night, but eventually fell 3-1 after surrendering three second-half goals.
Junior Jenna Harris (Aurora, Colo./Smoky Hill) ended a scoreless tie at the 22:23 mark of the first period when she redirected a pass form sophomore Angelina Banaag (Virginia Beach, Va./Green Run) into the back of the net.
Sophomore goalkeeper Laura Baker (Kent, England/Langley Park) used six first half saves to hold the Cavaliers scoreless for nearly 41 minutes of action. Baker would finish the match with ten saves.
Virginia notched its first goal at the 40:55 mark when Inge Kaars Sijpesteijn found a way to finally get a shot passed Baker.
The score remained tied until Mia Link put the Cavaliers on top for good when she netted an unassisted goal on a penalty corner with just 12:31 remaining in the match.
Senior Alyssa Collis (Kaleden, British Columbia/ Penticton Secondary) tallied an impressive two defensive saves in a strong defensive effort by VCU. The Rams surrendered just three goals despite being out shot 23-2.
VCU returns to action Sunday, September 17 when they travel to Farmville to tangle with the Longwood Lancers at 1 p.m.
