Box Score
NEWARK, Del. – Freshman Rebecca Sullivan (Fredericksburg, Va./Stafford) gave the Rams an early 1-0 lead, but Virginia Commonwealth University (1-9, 0-2) eventually fell to the University of Delaware (5-6, 2-0) 4-2 Friday night at Rullo Stadium.
Sullivan broke a scoreless tie at the 12:50 mark of the first period when she redirected a pass from senior Ashley Cadwallader (Fairfax, Va./Fairfax) into the back of the net.
The Blue Hens answered with goals from Molly Burke and Casey Howard to take a 2-1 lead into the break.
After assisting on Delaware’s first two goals, midfielder Katie Evans gave the Blue Hens their third-straight goal and a 3-1 lead just 12 minutes into the second period.
Five minutes later freshman Emilie Osinga (Aerdenhout, Netherlands/Stedelijk Gymnasium, Haarlem) cut the lead in half with her fourth goal of the season. Fellow freshman Vicky Smith (Rumson, N.J./Rumson Fair-Haven) assisted Osinga.
The Rams were unable to pull any closer, however, as the Blue Hens withstood the VCU attack and picked up an insurance goal at the 62:19 mark.
Sophomore goalkeeper Laura Baker (Kent, England/Langley Park) played the entire 70 minutes between the pipes and charted nine saves.
The Rams return home Sunday, October 1 to host James Madison University at 1 p.m. at Cary Street Field.
