RICHMOND, Va. – Just two weeks after donating $1,500 to the victims of Hurricane Katrina, Virginia Commonwealth University department of athletics found another way to help.  Ram student-athletes from the baseball, men’s basketball, women’s basketball, women's track and field, and tennis teams joined forces with the local chapter of the American Red Cross, collecting monetary contributions at the NASCAR festivities last weekend at Richmond International Raceway.

“We are saddened by the devastation in the southeast,” commented VCU Director of Athletics Dr. Richard L. Sander.  “With Tulane being a former conference member of VCU in the Metro, we feel like it is our duty to offer support to a community that has so eagerly embraced our coaches, student-athletes and staff both on the field and off the field."

Sander and the VCU family previously donated a portion of the proceeds from its 11th Annual Charles Barkley Celebrity Golf Tournament, while making an additional contribution from the VCU SportsCenter to the victims of the devastating event via the Red Cross.
