RAMS READY FOR SPRING SCHEDULE
2-26-07

RICHMOND, Va. – The VCU golf team begins the spring portion of its schedule this week at the Argonaut Invitational in Pensacola, Fla., hosted by the University of West Florida.

Under head coach Matt Ball, the Rams will look for a combination of veterans and newcomers to lead the team through the spring season. Senior Jens Fahrbring (Sollentuna, Sweden) had the top stroke average in the fall at 73.80 in 15 rounds. Freshman Lanto Griffin (Blacksburg, Va.) had the top two finishes for the Rams, tying for fourth at the Mid Pines Intercollegiate and at the Duke Golf Classic. Fellow freshman Rafael Campos (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico) was second on the team with a 74.00 stroke average in nine rounds.

Senior Daryl Chappell (Richmond, Va.) should also be a major contributor in 2007. He led the Rams and was tied for 15th at the Mattaponi Springs Shootout in September, including shooting a team-low 66 in the first round. Chappell averaged 74.42 in 12 rounds this fall. Fellow seniors Andrea Perrino (Livorno, Italy) and Dustin Hussey (Ridgeway, Va.), as well as juniors William Thompson (South Hill, Va.) and Alex Brown (Richmond, Va.), will add veteran depth to the team. Perrino averaged 75.17 in the fall in six rounds, while Thompson averaged 75.92 and Hussey and Brown averaged 76.33.

Sophomore Matt Brookbanks (West Midlands, England) and freshman Michele Gallini (Novi Ligure, Italy) will battle to make the travel squad for the Rams this spring. Brookbanks averaged 74.89 in nine rounds in the fall, while Gallini averaged 76.33 in three rounds. Brookbanks was third on the team and tied for 18th at the Mid Pines Intercollegiate in September, including shooting a season-low 69 in the first round.

The Rams will again have a challenging schedule in the spring. During the month of March, VCU will travel to the Cleveland Golf Championships in Aiken, S.C., the Pinehurst Intercollegiate in Pinehurst, N.C., and the USA Spring Classic in Mobile, Ala. The Colonial Athletic Association Championship will take place April 20-22 at Hot Springs, Va. The Cavalier Classic will conclude the regular season in late April. The NCAA East Regional will be held May 17-19 in Alpharetta, Ga. VCU will host the NCAA Championships May 30-June 2 at the Golden Horseshoe in Williamsburg, Va.

Complete Final Round Standings

PINEHURST, N.C. – Virginia Commonwealth University’s golf team posted the lowest score at Sunday’s final round of the Colonial Athletic Association Championship, but it was not enough to catch Georgia State University, which held a 23-stroke lead to begin the day.

The Rams (295-308-290—893), who boast seven CAA Championships in school history, claimed their first-ever runner-up honors with a ten-stroke margin over the nearest competitor.

Senior Manuel Relancio (Corrientes, Argentina/Instituto Modelo Jean Piaget) (70-73-72—215) (pictured) narrowly missed becoming the first individual champion for VCU since 2002. Relancio birdied holes 15 and 16 and nearly made a birdie putt on 18 that would have forced a playoff against champion Mark Haastrup (70-75-69—214) of GSU. Relancio ended his CAA Tournament career with two-straight runner-up finishes as well as a fifth-place finish his sophomore season.

Junior Jens Fahrbring (Sollentuna, Sweden/Rudbeckskolan) (71-79-73—223) carded a final round 73 to finish in sixth-place, while junior Andrea Perrino (Livorno, Italy/Cecioni Scientific Lycee) (80-75-71—226) fired an even-par 71 to finish tenth.

Juniors Daryl Chappell (Dinwiddie, Va./Dinwiddie) (76-81-77—234) and Dustin Hussey (Ridgeway, Va./Magna Vista) (78-82-74—234) each tied for the 26th position.

The Rams return to action April 21-23 when they travel to University Park, Pa. for the Penn State Intercollegiate.

Complete Day Two Results

PINEHURST, N.C. – Senior Manuel Relancio (Corrientes, Argentina/Instituto Modelo Jean Piaget) fired a second-round 73 to claim a one-stroke lead heading into the final round of the Colonial Athletic Association Championship.

Despite blistering conditions at Pinehurst Resort, the Rams (295-308—603) ended the day in second place, 23 strokes behind Georgia State University.

Relancio (70-73—143), who holds a one-stroke lead over Steve Tiley of GSU, narrowly made VCU’s staring lineup for this weekend’s CAA Championship.

“Manu almost didn’t make the trip because he had a case of the shanks,” said head coach Matt Ball. “He worked really hard last week to get his swing back and raise his confidence. Judging by the way he’s playing, I’d say his hard work paid off.”

Junior Jens Fahrbring (Sollentuna, Sweden/Rudbeckskolan) (71-79—150) fought a toothache on Saturday and has himself in position for a top-ten finish. Fahrbring is currently tie
