Ruther Glen, Va. - Virginia Commonwealth University finished tied for 12th in the inaugural Mattaponi Springs Shootout, the first regular season event hosted by the Rams in nearly two decades. Wake Forest University (279-279-281=839) posted a score of 25-under par to claim the team title, while Demon Deacon senior Kyle Reifers (67-66-69=202) earned individual honors after carding three sub-par rounds to finish at 14 under.
The Rams were led by senior Manuel Relancio (Corrientes, Argentina/Instituto Modelo Jean Piaget) (71-69-72), who tied for seventh with a score of four-under par. Junior Jens Fahrbring (Sollentuna, Sweden/Rudbeckskolan) (76-74-70) had the low third round score for VCU with a two-under, 70, while junior Daryl Chappell (Richmond, Va./Dinwiddie) ended with a score of 223 (74-74-75). Senior Andrea Perrino (Livorno, Italy/Cecioni Scientific Lycee) posted a score of 233 (78-80-75), while freshman Matthew Brookbanks (West Midlands, England/Solihull) shot a 238 (82-80-76).
“Mattaponi Springs was a tremendous venue for our first home tournament in a number of years,” said VCU head coach Matt Ball. “The course staff as well as all of our volunteers made this an enjoyable event for all coaches and players involved.”
The Rams return to action October 9-11 at the Xavier Invitational in Loveland, Ohio.

Ruther Glen, Va. - Virginia Commonwealth University finished in 12th position after day one of the Mattaponi Springs Shootout, an event in which the Rams are playing host. The fourteen team tournament is currently led by Wake Forest University (279-279-558) at 18 under par.
Senior Manuel Relancio (Corrientes, Argentina/Instituto Modelo Jean Piaget) paced VCU with a four-under 140 (71-69), which tied for seventh, just seven strokes behind leader Kyle Reifers of Wake Forest. Junior Daryl Chappel (Richmond, Va./Dinwiddie) carded a pair of 74s to finish tied for 39th with a score of 148. Junior Jens Fahrbring (Sollentuna, Sweden/Rudbeckskolan) had rounds of 76 and 74 (150), while senior Andrea Perrino (Livorno, Italy/Cecioni Scientific Lycee) carded a score of 158 (78-80). Freshman Matthew Brookbanks (West Midlands, England/Solihull) shot a 182 (82-80).

RAMS SET TO HOST MATTAPONI SPRINGS SHOOTOUT

RICHMOND, Va. – Virginia Commonwealth University is set to host its first Mattaponi (pronounced matta-pone-aye) Springs Collegiate Shootout next week at the Richmond area’s newest golf course. The Rams will host 14 teams, including nationally-ranked Wake Forest, Oct. 3-4, at the 6,937-yard, par-72 layout. The tournament, which will be featured on the Golf Channel’s College Golf Central, will also offer live scoring throughout the event at golfstat.com.
The Shootout will begin with a College-Am on Sunday, pairing amateurs with a college player from their favorite team. Collegiate play will then begin with 36-holes on Monday, followed by a single and final round of competition on Tuesday.
