AIKEN, S.C. – Junior Daryl Chappell (Dinwiddie, Va./Dinwiddie) (70-76-69--215) (pictured) fired a final-round 69 to lead Virginia Commonwealth University to a third-place finish at the Cleveland Golf Palmetto Intercollegiate on Tuesday.
Chappell, who began the day tied for 17th, used his second sub-par round of the tournament to finish runner-up in the individual standings, just three strokes behind tournament winner Jordan Irwin (70-71-71--212) of Houston. Chappell’s efforts earned him the lowest individual finish of his collegiate career.
The Rams (290-284-299--873) held a three-stroke lead after day one, but could not hold off a strong charge from the University of Houston (288-293-285--869) as well as the host-squad from South Carolina-Aiken (291-293-285-869), both of whom tied for top honors. No team finished at even-par or better on Tuesday as weather conditions produced wind gusts that reached speeds up to 40 mph.
Junior Andrea Perrino (Livorno, Italy/Cecioni Scientific Lycee) (74-67-78--219), who carded the low round of the tournament for VCU on day one, finished tied for 13th. Senior Manuel Relancio (Corrientes, Argentina/Instituto Modelo Jean Piaget) (73-70-77) turned in a two-day score of 220 to finish tied for 18th, while juniors Dustin Hussey (Ridgeway, Va./Magna Vista) (73-75-75--223) and Jens Fahbring (Sollentuna, Sweden/Rudbeckskolan) (77-72-81--230) ended their rounds tied for 25th and 42nd, respectively.
The Rams return to action this weekend when they travel to North Carolina for the Pinehurst Intercollegiate, which runs from March 19-21.
