Complete Final Round Standings

PINEHURST, N.C. – Virginia Commonwealth University’s golf team posted the lowest score at Sunday’s final round of the Colonial Athletic Association Championship, but it was not enough to catch Georgia State University, which held a 23-stroke lead to begin the day.

The Rams (295-308-290—893), who boast seven CAA Championships in school history, claimed their first-ever runner-up honors with a ten-stroke margin over the nearest competitor.

Senior Manuel Relancio (Corrientes, Argentina/Instituto Modelo Jean Piaget) (70-73-72—215) (pictured) narrowly missed becoming the first individual champion for VCU since 2002. Relancio birdied holes 15 and 16 and nearly made a birdie putt on 18 that would have forced a playoff against champion Mark Haastrup (70-75-69—214) of GSU. Relancio ended his CAA Tournament career with two-straight runner-up finishes as well as a fifth-place finish his sophomore season.

Junior Jens Fahrbring (Sollentuna, Sweden/Rudbeckskolan) (71-79-73—223) carded a final round 73 to finish in sixth-place, while junior Andrea Perrino (Livorno, Italy/Cecioni Scientific Lycee) (80-75-71—226) fired an even-par 71 to finish tenth.

Juniors Daryl Chappell (Dinwiddie, Va./Dinwiddie) (76-81-77—234) and Dustin Hussey (Ridgeway, Va./Magna Vista) (78-82-74—234) each tied for the 26th position.

The Rams return to action April 21-23 when they travel to University Park, Pa. for the Penn State Intercollegiate.

PINEHURST, N.C. – Senior Manuel Relancio (Corrientes, Argentina/Instituto Modelo Jean Piaget) (pictured) fired a second-round 73 to claim a one-stroke lead heading into the final round of the Colonial Athletic Association Championship.

Despite blistering conditions at Pinehurst Resort, the Rams (295-308—603) ended the day in second place, 23 strokes behind Georgia State University.

Relancio (70-73—143), who holds a one-stroke lead over Steve Tiley of GSU, narrowly made VCU’s staring lineup for this weekend’s CAA Championship.

“Manu almost didn’t make the trip because he had a case of the shanks,” said head coach Matt Ball. “He worked really hard last week to get his swing back and raise his confidence. Judging by the way he’s playing, I’d say his hard work paid off.”

Junior Jens Fahrbring (Sollentuna, Sweden/Rudbeckskolan) (71-79—150) fought a toothache on Saturday and has himself in position for a top-ten finish. Fahrbring is currently tied for eighth.

Junior Andrea Perrino (Livorno, Italy/Cecioni Scientific Lycee) (80-75—155) shaved five strokes off his round-one total and is currently in 18th.

Junior Daryl Chappell (Dinwiddie, Va./Dinwiddie) (76-81—157) shot a round-two 81, while junior Dustin Hussey (Ridgeway, Va./Magna Vista) (78-82—160) carded an 82.

Final-round action begins Sunday morning at 8 a.m.
