RICHMOND, Va. ˆ  Richmond built an eight-point halftime lead and went on a 12-0 run midway through the second period to post a 72-54 victory over crosstown rival Virginia Commonwealth in Colonial Athletic Association men's basketball Tuesday night at the ALLTEL Pavilion at the Stuart C. Siegel Center.

The visiting Spiders shot 48.3 percent before intermission to take a 38-30 advantage into the break and put the game away with 12 straight points to go up 57-39 with 10:11 left to play. Senior Greg Stevenson led the way with 22 points and seven rebounds as UR put an end to the Rams‚ 11-game winning streak on its home floor before a season-high crowd of 7,306 at the ALLTEL Pavilion.

Senior LaMar Taylor (Richmond, Va./John Marshall), playing for the final time before the home fans, led VCU with a season-high 15 points and converted three-of-six three-point attempts in the loss. Taylor also dished out seven assists and was honored along with classmates Bo Jones (Richmond, Va./Huguenot) and Scott Lilly (Charlotte, N.C./Independence) in a ceremony prior to player introductions.

Richmond, which won for the 10th time in its last 11 games, finished its regular season with a 21-6 overall record and captured the CAA regular-season title with a 12-4 mark in league play. VCU, which fell to 16-13 overall and 9-7 in the conference, also received 10 points and a team-best eight rebounds from senior L.F. Likcholitov (St. Petersburg, Russia/St. Petersburg Tech. Univ.) and 10 points from freshman Johnnie Story (Hampton, Va./Hampton) on the evening.

VCU will next compete in this weekend‚s CAA tournament, where the winner will receive an automatic bid to the NCAAs. The Rams are seeded third in the six-team field and will face #6 James Madison (11-16, 6-10 CAA) in Saturday‚s first round beginning at 3:30 p.m. All of VCU‚s CAA tournament games will be broadcast live on Richmond‚s WRNL radio (AM 910) and can also be heard via the internet at www.vcu.edu/vcurams.
