RAMS FALL TO UAB 70-61

Despite a 22-point effort from Virginia Commonwealth senior Bo Jones, the Rams lost a narrow 70-61 decision to the University of Alabama Birmingham Saturday evening.

The two teams battled evenly through the first minutes of the game. VCU (7-6) then surged to a nine-point lead at 29-20 with 5:21 to play in the first half as guard Jones keyed an 18-9 run with eight points. Jones scored 16 of his game-high 22 points in the first half.

UAB (6-5) fought back to cut the deficit to six at the half, as Walker bounced in a shot at the buzzer to make the score 34-28. Blazer forward Eric Batchelor led UAB with 11 points in the first half and finished with 16 for the game.

The Blazers battled to a tie at 38-38 at the 16:27 mark, and then traded the lead twice with the Rams before embarking on an11-0 run.

VCU would get as close as five points at 66-61 with 0:21 remaining, but the Blazers each made a pair of free throws in the final 20 seconds to seal the victory.

Freshman Johnnie Story and sophomore Matt Treadwell followed Jones with 10 points each. Richmond native LaMar Taylor lead the Rams with six assists.
