PELLOT-ROSA BEFRIENDS CAMPER
9-6-05

The first day of camp is always the most hectic, the most chaotic and the most unorganized - campers eagerly trying to figure out where they are going to fit in with their friends, their teammates and their coaches. However, this first day of camp would prove to be special for two individuals in particular, Jesse Pellot-Rosa and his newfound friend, then 13-year old Dequane Monroe.

The unlikely relationship started with a simple phone call from Dequane's grandmother to VCU's Director of Basketball Operations Kevin Brooks in June 2004. You see, Dequane was different from the majority of the other campers; he suffered from a complex developmental disability known as autism. Autism affects the functioning of the brain and impacts normal development of the brain in the areas of social interaction and communications skills. However, Brooks did not hesitate to tell Dequane's grandmother that he would be welcomed with open arms.

Dequane's zeal on the court was contagious. His fellow campers and coaches immediately took a liking to him; they were in awe of his spirit and immense desire to play the game of basketball. As the week progressed, Dequane developed a unique bond with VCU basketball standout Jesse Pellot-Rosa.

As the end of camp loomed, Jesse decided that he wanted to use his paycheck for the week to fund Dequane's spot at an additional session of camp. Upon approaching Brooks about his decision, Brooks and Coach Capel were astounded that Jesse - despite his underprivileged upbringing and his own responsibilities - would offer to give up so much for the happiness of a young boy. Jesse's unselfish actions earned Dequane a sponsored spot at the next week of camp.

Jesse and Dequane are two very different people, yet found common ground on the basketball court. It is certain that Jesse's selfless actions have altered the mind-set of the young boy and perhaps all of the other campers as well. For a brief moment, Dequane was treated as any ordinary boy and for that short time he was not judged by his disability. A little kindness sure can go a long way.

Dequane and Jesse will be together again at this year's basketball camp.
