BRETT NELSON / DIRECTOR OF BASKETBALL OPERATIONS
In his first season as the Director of Basketball Operations at Virginia Commonwealth University, Brett Nelson makes his way to Richmond via Colorado State where he served in the same capacity for one season.
Nelson, a three-year starter and four-year letterwinner at the University of Florida from 1999-2003, holds UF school records in three-pointers made (274) and attempted (689). He also ranks second on the Gators' all-time list in steals with 199 and sixth in career assists per game at 3.16. Playing under Billy Donovan and new Ram head coach Anthony Grant, Nelson finished his career in Gainesville with 1,416 points while hitting 82.5 percent of his free throw attempts.
While at UF, he also established the school record for consecutive games with a three-pointer (33), marking the sixth-longest streak in Southeastern Conference history. He was a member of four of Florida’s NCAA Tournament teams, including the 2000 squad that played for the national title. Nelson was named a Preseason Naismith Award Semifinalist during his senior season.
In 2003, Nelson continued his playing career competing professionally in Sweden. He was also a member of the University of Florida summer tour in 2001 and a member of the U.S. Junior All-Star Team during the Albert Schweitzer Basketball Tournament in Germany in 1997.
Nelson played prep ball at St. Albans High School in St. Albans, W.Va., where he set the state career scoring record with 2,199 points in three seasons. He was named as a McDonald's All-American and competed in the Magic Johnson Roundball Classic in 1999.
Nelson obtained a bachelor’s degree in sociology from the University of Florida in 2004. |
