FAMENI NOTCHES FIRST DOUBLE-DOUBLE FOR VCU IN 79-60 CAA WIN OVER UD

RICHMOND, Va. – Virginia Commonwealth University, led by junior forward Wil Fameni’s (Duoala, Cameroon/Amelia Academy) season-high 23 points and 11 rebounds, won its seventh straight game, beating the University of Delaware Wednesday night, 79-60, at the Alltel Pavilion at the Stuart C. Siegel Center in the Colonial Athletic Association opener for both teams.
VCU (9-2, 1-0 CAA) started the game on a 9-0 run in the first four minutes before Herb Courtney hit eight straight points for Delaware (0-8, 0-1 CAA) to make it 9-8. The Rams then went on a 17-4 spurt to push the lead to 30-14 with 6:30 left in the period. VCU would take a 39-23 advantage to the locker room at the break.
Delaware began the second half with a 14-6 run that pulled the Blue Hens within eight points at 45-37, but it was as close as Delaware would get as VCU’s lead ballooned to as many as 20 points, 77-57, with under a minute to play.
Junior guard Jamal Shuler (Jacksonville, N.C./Jacksonville) (pictured) added 19 points off the bench on 5 of 7 shooting behind the arc, while senior guard B.A. Walker (Onancock, Va./Nandua) chipped in 13 points as nine Rams scored in the game.
Courtney led all scorers with a game-high 25 points. Sophomore guard Zaire Taylor added 12 points and senior guard Calvin Cannon scored 10 points off the bench for Delaware.
With the win, VCU has now won the past eight games in the series.
VCU, under the direction of first-year head coach Anthony Grant, return to action on Saturday, Dec. 30, with a 7:30 p.m. home contest against Appalachian State in the Alltel Pavilion at the Stuart C. Siegel Center.
