PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – Senior guard B.A. Walker (Onancock, Va./Nandua) led the Rams with 24 points, including 19 in the second half, as Virginia Commonwealth University topped Drexel University 75-68 Saturday afternoon in Colonial Athletic Association action at the Daskalakis Athletic Center.
The Rams (18-3, 10-0 CAA) won their ninth straight and have won 16 of their past 17 games. VCU is 9-0 on opponent’s floors, the top mark in Division I. The Dragons fell to 15-5 overall and 7-3 in the CAA.
The teams stayed with four points of each other throughout the first half. VCU had an early 8-4 lead in the first 2:20 of the contest. The Rams had a 15-11 lead before Drexel used a 7-0 run to take an 18-15 advantage midway through the first half. VCU had a late 29-27 lead before Randy Oveneke hit the final two field goals of the half, including a follow dunk at the buzzer, and the Dragons took a 31-29 lead at the break. Scott Rodgers led the home team with 10 first-half points.
Walker hit five of his six three-pointers after intermission, including a trey with 43.3 seconds left that gave the Rams a 68-60 lead. VCU scored its final seven points from the free throw line.
Sophomore guard Eric Maynor (Fayetteville, N.C./Westover) had 17 points and four assists for the Rams. Senior guard Jesse Pellot-Rosa (Richmond, Va./George Wythe) added 14 points.
Bashir Mason led the Dragons with 19 points. Drexel played without leading scorer Frank Elegar, who was suspended for the game.
The Rams return to CAA action on Monday, Jan. 29, at 7:30 p.m. as they play host to William & Mary at the Alltel Pavilion at the Stuart C. Siegel Center.
