NORFOLK, Va. – First-place Virginia Commonwealth University fell to second-place CAA-rival Old Dominion University 79-63 Saturday afternoon at the Constant Center. Sophomore guard Eric Maynor paced the Rams with 17 points, five rebounds and five assists. Senior guard B.A. Walker added 13 points and junior guard Jamal Shuler chipped in 9 points.
The score was tied 60-60 with 3:49 remaining. ODU (19-7, 12-3 CAA) finished the game on a 19-3 run to claim the victory. Brian Henderson hit a three-pointer with 3:34 left to give the Monarchs the lead for good. ODU tallied 11 of its final 16 points from the free throw line. Brandon Johnson hit a three-pointer at the buzzer to give ODU its final points.
The Rams (21-5, 13-2) built a 15-9 lead in the first nine minutes of the contest. Walker had five and Maynor four in the initial outburst. ODU used a 9-2 run to take its first lead at 18-17 with eight minutes left in the period. The lead changed hands several times before the Monarchs used 9-2 spurt to close the half and take a 34-28 lead at the break.
VCU started the second half on a 10-4 run to knot the score at 38-38. The teams stayed with five points of each other until a free throw by junior forward Michael Anderson tied the game at 60-60 with 3:49 remaining.
VCU continues conference play on Wednesday, Feb. 14, with a 7 p.m. contest at UNC Wilmington.
