RICHMOND, Va. – Junior guard Jamal Shuler (Jacksonville, N.C./Jacksonville) recorded a career-high 25 points and junior forward Michael Anderson (Virginia Beach, Va./Landstown) added a career-best 15 points as Virginia Commonwealth University outscored Georgia State University 100-71 in Colonial Athletic Association action Saturday afternoon in front of a Homecoming crowd of 7,144 at the Alltel Pavilion at the Stuart C. Siegel Center.
Under first-year head coach Anthony Grant, the Rams (20-4, 12-1 CAA) reached 20 wins on the earliest date in school history to remain in first play in the conference. The Panthers fell to 8-15 overall and 4-9 in the CAA.
VCU jumped out to a quick 9-1 lead in the first three minutes as senior guard B.A. Walker’s (Onancock, Va./Nandua)scored the first five points for the Rams. A Walker layup with 12:13 left in the half gave VCU a 21-7 advantage. After the Panthers scored the next five points, VCU used an 18-2 spurt to make it 39-14. The Rams took a 54-37 lead at the break. Anderson and Walker each had 13 points in the opening period and Shuler added 10. Sophomore guard Eric Maynor (Fayetteville, N.C./Westover) had a dozen assists in the half.
The Rams led by at least 15 throughout the second half. VCU’s largest lead was 32 at 95-63 with just under three minutes remaining. A jumper by junior forward Wil Fameni (Duoala, Cameroon/Amelia Academy) with 46 seconds left took the Rams to the century mark for the second time this season as VCU claimed the 100-71 win.
Walker finished with 16 points. Senior guard Jesse Pellot-Rosa (Richmond, Va./George Wythe) had 13 points and Fameni added 11. Maynor collected 15 assists, one away from the school record.
Junior guard Ryan McBride had 15 points for Georgia State. Senior forward Lance Perique added 12 and junior center Deven Dickerson of Richmond tallied 11. The Panthers shot 57% from the floor, but committed 23 turnovers.
VCU returns to CAA action on Thursday, Feb. 8, with a 7 p.m. home contest against George Mason at the Alltel Pavilion at the Stuart C. Siegel Center. The game will be televised nationally on ESPNU.
