RICHMOND, Va. – Junior forward Wil Fameni (Duoala, Cameroon/Amelia Academy) recorded his fourth double-double of the season, and senior center Calvin Roland (Hephzibah, Ga./Aiken Tech) match his season high with 10 points as Virginia Commonwealth University defeated George Mason University 63-49 in Colonial Athletic Association action Thursday evening at the Alltel Pavilion at the Stuart C. Siegel Center.

The Rams (21-4, 13-1) remain in first place in the CAA, while the Patriots drop to 13-11 overall and 7-7 in league play.

The Rams hit their first five shots of the game, including three three-pointers, and bolted to a 13-2 lead in the first 2:30 of the contest. Senior guard B.A. Walker’s (Onancock, Va./Nandua)hit two of the bonus shots for VCU. After Mason cut the lead to seven at 21-14 with 5:20 left, Fameni scored six straight points to give the Rams their largest first-half lead at 27-14. The Patriots scored the final five points of the period to trail 27-19 at the break.

Mason kept it close in the second half, pulling to within four at 47-43 with 6:45 left before the Rams finished on a 16-6 run to claim the 63-49 victory.

Fameni finished with 10 points and 11 boards. Roland had eight of his 10 points in the second half. Walker finished with 17 points and sophomore guard Eric Maynor (Fayetteville, N.C./Westover) added 13 points and seven assists.

Junior forward Will Thomas paced the Patriots with 17 points and 12 rebounds. Junior forward Darryl Monroe had 13 points and sophomore guard Dre Smith finished with 11.

VCU has won 12 of its past 13 games and 19 of the past 21 contests.

VCU returns to CAA action on Saturday, Feb. 10, with a 12 p.m. contest at Old Dominion. The game is sold out and will be televised regionally on CN8.
