VIRGINIA COMMONWEALTH TAKES 67-56 VICTORY OVER EAST CAROLINA
Box Score
1-27-00
Virginia Commonwealth used a strong second half to put
away East Carolina by a final of 67-56 on Wednesday night in the
ALLTEL Pavilion at the Stuart C. Siegel Center. The Rams utilized
high-percentage shooting and several trips to the free-throw line
in the final period to end their two-game homestand on a high
note.
Virginia Commonwealth was led by LaMar Taylor (Richmond, Va.),
who scored 20 points to lead the team, his seventh 20-point game
of the season. Two other players finished in double figures for
the Rams, Josh Graham, who had a career-high 11 points, and Bo
Jones, who posted his 10th straight game in double figures with
an even 10 points. Neil Punt finished with 20 points to lead the
Pirates.
East Carolina took the lead early in the first half, but Virginia
Commonwealth went on top with just over four minutes played in
the period. A layup by Patrick Kodjoe (Solden, Germany) gave the
Rams a 20-13 lead with just over seven minutes to play. The
Pirates would rally, however, going on
an 11-2 run to end the half on top by a score of 24-22.
Virginia Commonwealth answered East Carolina's charge late in the
first 20 minutes with a run of its own in the opening moments of
the second half. The Rams scored the first 10 points of the final
period to take a 32-24 lead with just over 17 minutes to play.
The Rams, which hit 14 of their 24 shots from the field in the
second half (58.3 percent) would never trail again, leading by
double digits for much of the game's final 10 minutes. The
Pirates cut their deficit to five, 48-43, with eight minutes
remaining, but would get no closer. Virginia Commonwealth iced
the game by hitting 15-of-25 free-throw attempts in the second
half.
The win for the Rams marks the eighth time this season they have
overcome a second-half deficit to earn a victory, and raises
their record to 10-7 on the year and 3-3 in Colonial Athletic
Association play. East Carolina now stands at 8-11 overall with a
3-5 mark in the conference. Virginia Commonwealth plays the first
of four straight road games on Saturday at Old Dominion. The game
is set for a 7:30 p.m. start.
