2-8-00
Box Score
Virginia Commonwealth was unable to overcome a slow start as it
dropped a 69-57 decision to city rival Richmond on Tuesday night
at the Robins Center. The Spiders led the entire game as the Rams
ended a four-game road trip, the longest by any Colonial Athletic
Association team this season.
Two Virginia Commonwealth players shared team-high honors in
scoring, as Shawn Hampton (Baltimore, Md.) and LaMar Taylor
(Richmond, Va.) each had 11 points for the Rams. Hampton also led
the team with seven rebounds. Richmond's Reggie Brown led all
scorers with 25 points as he hit five three-pointers on the
evening. Kinte Smith added 18 for the Spiders.
Brown opened the game with two consecutive three-pointers to
spark Richmond to a fast start. Virginia Commonwealth stayed
close to the Spiders for most of the half, despite the fact that
they shot just 29.2 percent (7-of-24) from the field in the
opening period. Richmond went into the locker room at halftime
leading by just seven points, 29-22.
As the second half began, the Spiders scored 14 of the first 18
points of the period to push out to their biggest lead of the
night, 43-26. Richmond maintained a double-figure lead for most
of the rest of the evening, as the Rams were hurt by committing
13 turnovers in the final 20 minutes.
Virginia Commonwealth now stand at 10-11 overall and 3-7 in CAA
play, while Richmond improves to 12-9 on the season and 7-3 in
the conference. The Rams play their first home game in 17 days on
Saturday as they entertain North Carolina-Wilmington in the
ALLTEL Pavilion at the Stuart C. Siegel Center. The game is set
to begin at 7:30 p.m.
