Sophomore forward Tom Strohbehn scored 15 points and led four
William & Mary starters in double figures as the Tribe
defeated Virginia Commonwealth 85-56 on Saturday afternoon at
William & Mary Hall.
The Tribe connected on 31-of-54 field goal attempts for 57.4 percent, the highest a team has shot against Virginia Commonwealth in the Mack McCarthy era. In addition, William & Mary hit 13-of-22 three-point field goal attempts for 59.1 percent, the best by a Ram opponent this season.
William & Mary never trailed in the game. After the Rams tied the game at four, on a Bo Jones (Richmond, Va.) jumper, the Tribe went on a 9-2 run to build a six point lead. The Rams cut the deficit to four twice before intermission, but William & Mary led 42-30 at intermission.
The Rams appeared poised to make another remarkable comeback, scoring the first seven points after intermission to cut the deficit to 42-37 with 18:22 remaining. Sophomore forward Shawn Hampton (Baltimore, Md.) and Jones each had buckets during the run, while junior guard LaMar Taylor (Richmond, Va.) connected on a three-point field goal.
The Tribe responded by scoring the next six points and holding the Rams to just four points over the next six minutes and William & Mary was en route to the victory.
William & Mary had five players hit three-point field goals and totaled 13 treys on the afternoon. Scotty Scott and Jim Moran had three bonus buckets and 13 points each. Mit Winter had a pair of three-point field goals and rounded out four Tribe players in double figures with 13 points.
The Rams were paced by Jones and Taylor with nine points apiece. Sophomore forward Reggie Okosa came off the bench to add eight points and a team-high 10 rebounds. Hampton, who scored seven points, passed the 500-point total for his career.
William & Mary improved to 8-12 overall
and 3-6 in Colonial Athletic Association play while Virginia
Commonwealth is now 10-10 overall and 3-6 in conference action.
The Rams will be back in aaction on Tuesday night when they
travel across town to battle Richmond. Game time is set for 7:30
p.m. at the Robins Center.
