BERNARD HOPKINS

Bernard Hopkins ushered Virginia Commonwealth into a new era by dominating the Colonial Athletic Association in the Rams’ first year in the league. He scored nearly 1,000 points in just two seasons at Virginia Commonwealth, finishing with 950. Hopkins was among the nation’s best shooters as a junior, converting 58.5 percent of his shots to finish 25th in the country.

In his senior season, Hopkins took off, compiling 538 points while pulling down 333 rebounds, the third-highest single season total for a Ram. He registered 19 double-doubles, more in one year than any Virginia Commonwealth ever had, and led the Rams to the 1996 NCAA tournament, the school’s first NCAA appearance in 11 years. Hopkins’ remarkable year garnered him CAA player of the year honors. He also earned most valuable player honors at the CAA tournament.
