Dominance and consistency. Those are two accurate descriptions for the VCU men’s soccer program under the direction of head coach Tim O’Sullivan.
The Rams have won three of the past four regular-season titles in the Colonial Athletic Association, posting a record of 26-6-6 (.763) in conference contests in those four years.
VCU is one of five schools to be a national seed in the NCAA Tournament from 2002-04, joining Maryland, St. John’s, UCLA and Wake Forest. The Rams have earned an NCAA bid in six of the past nine years.
Under O’Sullivan, VCU has posted a record of 122-81-28 over the past 11 seasons, a winning percentage of .589. The Rams have posted double-figure wins in six of the past nine years, after reaching 10 wins just four times in the previous 19 campaigns.
O'Sullivan brought his Division I coaching experience to the Virginia Commonwealth program in 1995 after 12 years at the University of Richmond. He compiled a record of 115-108-25 there and led Richmond to an NCAA tournament appearance in 1990. Following that season, O'Sullivan was named South Atlantic Region, Colonial Athletic Association and Virginia Coach of the Year for his efforts.
A member of the National Soccer Coaches Association, O’Sullivan is a former member of the NCAA Division I soccer committee. He is also a coach for the Region I Olympic Development Program, which prepares outstanding youth players to represent the United States in international competition.
O'Sullivan was an assistant at his alma mater, Eckerd College, from 1979-81. He moved to Bowling Green, serving as top assistant and earning his master's degree in education in athletic administration and recreation in 1983.
O'Sullivan is married to the former Susan Coleman. The O'Sullivans have two daughters, Erinn and Megan.
