RAMS LOSE HEART-BREAKER TO NO. 13 MONARCHS IN DOUBLE OVERTIME

RICHMOND, Va. – Senior Thomas Weingartner (Munich, Germany) scored a short-handed goal for Virginia Commonwealth University in the 63rd minute to tie the match, but No. 13 Old Dominion got the game-winner in the second overtime period as the Monarchs claimed a 2-1 victory in Colonial Athletic Association play Tuesday evening at VCU’s Sports Backers Stadium.

The Rams (4-9-0, 2-4-0 CAA) played the final 48 minutes a man down. The Monarchs (9-2-1, 4-1-1 CAA) held a 21-12 advantage on shots, including 10-4 in shots on goal.

Senior Jared Kent scored for ODU in the 62nd minute on a close shot from the left side to give the Monarchs a 1-0 lead.

VCU answered a minute later as Weingartner nailed a free kick from 25 yards out to knot the score at 1-1.

Sophomore Trevor Banks ended the affair in the 107th minute as his shot found the back of the net inside the right post for a 2-1 victory.

Weingartner had four shots for the Rams, including two shots on goal. Banks led ODU with five shots.

Sophomore goalkeeper Andrew Dykstra (Woodbridge, Va.) (pictured) recorded eight saves for the Rams, including five in the second half. Freshman Sean Sigrist had three saves for the Monarchs.

The Rams will play at Northeastern on Friday, Oct. 13, at 6 p.m.
