TOWSON, Md. – Junior Matthijs Maruanaya (Alkmaar, Netherlands) (pictured) scored in the second half, but it was not enough as Virginia Commonwealth University dropped a 2-1 decision to No. 20 Towson University Colonial Athletic Association Sunday afternoon at Towson Center Field.
The Rams (4-12-0, 2-7-0 CAA) had eight shots on goal, compared to seven by the Tigers (13-1-2, 9-0-1 CAA). Towson owned a 15-14 edge on shots. The Tigers have a nine-game winning streak and 11-game unbeaten streak.
The match was scoreless for the first 79 minutes. In the 80th minute, Sebastian Haensel nailed a shot from 18 yards out into the far right corner to give the Tigers a 1-0 advantage. It was Haensel’s sixth goal of the season. Towson extended its lead to 2-0 in the 84th minute as Kevin Ruck hit a shot from 15 yards out, his third goal of the fall.
Maruanaya scored 22 seconds after Ruck’s goal as he took a pass from senior Thomas Weingartner (Munich, Germany) and connected on a shot from 20 yards away to pull VCU to within one at 2-1.
Weingartner padded the Rams with five shots. Haensel led the Tigers with four shots.
Sophomore Andrew Dykstra (Woodbridge, Va.) had five saves for VCU. Greg Flaherty posted seven saves for Towson.
The Rams will conclude their season on Friday, Oct. 27, with a 7 p.m. home CAA contest with James Madison at VCU’s Sports Backers Stadium.
