W&M NETS TWO LATE GOALS TO NIP VCU 2-1 IN OVERTIME

RICHMOND, Va. – Junior Matthijs Maruanaya (Alkmaar, Netherlands) put Virginia Commonwealth University on the board in the seventh minute, but William & Mary tallied two late goals to claim a 2-1 overtime win in Colonial Athletic Association play Sunday afternoon at VCU’s Sports Backers Stadium.

The Rams (4-8-0, 2-3-0) were outshot 12-8 in the match by the Tribe (6-6-1, 2-2-1). W&M had seven shots on goal, compared to four by VCU.

Maruanaya headed in a pass from junior Pat Viray (Reston, Va.) into the lower right corner just 6:32 into the match to put the Rams on top 1-0.

VCU held its lead until the 89th minute, when the Rams were whistled for a foul in the box. Sophomore Andrew Hoxie drilled the ball into the lower right corner with 1:55 remaining to knot the score at 1-1.

Hoxie ended the affair in the 97th minute as he picked up a loose ball and fired in the game-winner from 15 yards out to give W&M a 2-1 victory.

Sophomore goalkeeper Andrew Dykstra (Woodbridge, Va.) recorded four saves for the Rams, all in the first half. VCU also had a team save. Senior Kris Rake registered three saves for the Tribe.

The Rams will entertain nationally-ranked Old Dominion on Tuesday, Oct. 10, at 7 p.m. at VCU’s Sports Backers Stadium.
