RAMS TOP LANCERS 2-1 IN EXHIBITION ACTION

RICHMOND, Va. – Juniors Thomas Weingartner (Munich, Germany) and Matthijs Maruanaya (Alkmaar, Netherlands) each scored on free kicks late in the first half to erase an early deficit and give VCU a 2-1 exhibition victory over Longwood Wednesday evening at VCU's Sports Backers Stadium.

Freshman forward Chernor Diallo put a loose ball into the net in the 35th minute for the Lancers to break a scoreless tie.

Weingartner recorded the equalizer from the right side in the 40th minute to knot the score at 1-1. Maruanaya curved a free kick just inside the left post in the 43rd minute to give the Rams a 2-1 advantage.

VCU outshot Longwood 16-4, with a 13-2 margin in the first half. The Rams had seven shots on goal, while the Lancers had one shot on goal. VCU had a 6-2 edge in corner kicks.

The Rams play another exhibition match at Virginia on Saturday, August 19, at 7 p.m. VCU opens the regular season next weekend in the Nike/Alltel Classic at VCU's Sports Backers Stadium. The Rams face Alabama A&M on Friday, August 25, at 8 p.m. VCU battles Seton Hall on Sunday, August 26, at 3:30 p.m.
