RAMS FALL AT NO. 3 VIRGINIA 3-0 IN EXHIBITION MATCH

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Virginia Commonwealth University managed five shots and three shots on goal, but could not get on the scoreboard in a 3-0 loss at third-ranked Virginia in men’s soccer exhibition action Saturday evening in front of 1,054 fans at Klockner Stadium.
The Rams had four of their five shots in the first half. The Cavaliers tallied the lone goal of the first period as Nico Colaluca converted on a free kick from the top of the box.
Virginia added two goals in the second half. Sean Hinkle connected in the 50th minute and Matt Ayotte finished a header in the 69th minute to conclude the scoring.
Senior Thomas Weingartner (Munich, Germany) and sophomore Fred Owusu Sekyere (Suame-Kumase, Ghana) each had two shots and one shot on goal for the Rams.
Sophomore Andrew Dykstra (Woodbridge, Va.) recorded two saves in the first half for the Rams. Freshman Matthieu Douard (Rennes, France) registered one save in the second period.
VCU opens its regular season next weekend in the Nike/Alltel Classic at VCU’s Sports Backers Stadium. The Rams face Alabama A&M on Friday, Aug. 25, at 8 p.m. VCU takes on Seton Hall on Sunday, Aug. 27, at 3:30 p.m.
