RICHMOND, Va. – Junior David Rosenbaum (Washington, D.C.) assisted on the first goal and scored the second as Virginia Commonwealth University blanked Seton Hall 2-0 in the second round of the Nike/Alltel Classic Sunday afternoon at VCU’s Sports Backers Stadium.

In the day’s first match, senior Kurt Morsink had two goals as James Madison built a 4-1 lead and held on for a 4-3 victory over Alabama A&M.

Senior Evan Morris (Springfield, Va.) (pictured) took a pass from Rosenbaum and lofted a cross that found the back of the net from 40 yards out in the eighth minute to give the Rams (1-1-0) an early 1-0 lead over the Pirates (0-2-0). Rosenbaum finished a corner kick from senior Thomas Weingartner (Munich, Germany) in the 79th minute to give VCU an insurance goal.

Each team registered 13 shots. VCU had nine shots on goal, compared to three for Seton Hall. Sophomore Andrew Dykstra (Woodbridge, Va.) notched three saves for the Rams in recording his first shutout of the season. Senior Ian Joyce had seven saves for the Pirates.

In the first contest, Morsink scored in the seventh and 37th minutes as the Dukes (2-0-0) built a 3-1 lead at the break. Junior Lasse Kokko had JMU’s other first-half goal in the 12th minute. Junior Mosito Ranko converted a penalty kick for the Bulldogs (1-1-0) in the 31st minute. Sophomore Nick Zimmerman scored in the 79th minute for JMU, giving the Dukes a 4-1 lead. Junior Mfana Futhi Bhembe tallied a goal in the 85th minute and Ranko hit another penalty kick in the 86 minute to pull AAMU to within one, but it would finish 4-3.

The Rams return to action on Saturday, Sept. 2, for a 7 p.m. contest at VCU’s Sports Backers Stadium against nationally-ranked UNC Greensboro.
