CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Junior David Rosenbaum (Washington, D.C.) tied the match with 32 minutes remaining for Virginia Commonwealth University, but eighth-ranked North Carolina got two late goals to claim a 3-1 victory Tuesday evening at Fetzer Field.
Rosenbaum took a through ball from junior Matthijs Maruanaya (Alkmaar, Netherlands) (pictured) and beat charging goalkeeper Justin Hughes to knot the match at 1-1 with 32 minutes remaining in the contest. It was the first goal in four matches for the Rams (2-5-0) and the second of the season for Rosenbaum.
Sophomore midfielder Michael Callahan scored 40 minutes into the match as his shot from 18 yards out ricocheted off the left post into the net to give the Tar Heels (7-2-0) a 1-0 lead. It was the third goal of the season for Callahan.
The Tar Heels scored a pair of goals in less than two minutes to take a 3-1 advantage. Sophomore Stephen Bickford took a long shot that deflected off a VCU defender and curled inside the left post to snap a 1-1 tie. It was his second goal of the fall. Sophomore Scott Campbell took a through ball from Bickford and put it into the lower right corner with 18 minutes remaining for a 3-1 lead.
The Rams begin conference play on Friday, Sept. 22, at 7 p.m., against UNC Wilmington at VCU’s Sports Backers Stadium. |
