DYKSTRA RECORDS SIX SAVES IN 1-0 VCU WIN OVER UNC WILMINGTON

RICHMOND, Va. – Sophomore Andrew Dykstra (Woodbridge, Va.) registered his second shutout of the season and notched six saves as VCU opened Colonial Athletic Association play with a 1-0 victory over UNC Wilmington Friday evening at VCU’s Sports Backers Stadium.
The Rams (3-5-0, 1-0-0 CAA) won for the first time in five matches. The Seahawks (5-2-1, 0-1-0 CAA) snapped a six-game unbeaten streak.
VCU netted the game’s lone goal in the 71st minute as junior Thomas Weingartner (Munich, Germany) sent in a corner kick that sophomore Owusu Sekyere (Suame-Kumasi, Ghana) controlled and put in the net from close range. It was the second goal of the season for Sekyere.
Both teams had 10 shots. UNCW had six shots on goal, and VCU added four shots on goal. Dykstra recorded his seventh career shutout. The sophomore had two saves in the first half and four in the second stanza. Senior Brad Knighton (Richmond, Va.), a graduate of Godwin High School, had two saves for the Seahawks.
The Rams continue conference play on Sunday, Sept. 24, at 2 p.m. against Georgia State at VCU’s Sports Backers Stadium. |
