
MARUANAYA, DOS SANTOS, WEINGARTNER EARN ALL-CAA HONORS

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – Junior midfielder Matthijs Maruanaya (Alkmaar, Netherlands) (pictured) and sophomore defender Gerson Dos Santos (Sao Paulo, Brazil) were named Second Team All-Colonial Athletic Association in voting by the league’s head coaches.
Senior defender Thomas Weingartner (Munich, Germany) joined Dos Santos on the CAA All-Rookie Team.
Maruanaya started 17 matches and led the Rams with five goals, 12 points and two game-winning goals. He netted the game-winner in VCU’s 3-1 victory over seventh-ranked UNC Greensboro, and had the game-winning goal in the Rams’ 3-2 conference win at Delaware. Maruanaya was second on the team with 38 shots.
Dos Santos started 17 matches for the Rams and recorded one assist. He played for a defense that registered three shutouts and held 10 opponents to one goal or less.
Weingartner was one of four Rams to start all 18 matches. He led the team with four assists. Weingartner scored two goals and was tied for second on the team with eight points. Weingartner was part of a defense that recorded three shutouts and held 10 opponents to one goal or less.

RICHMOND, Va. – Virginia Commonwealth University and James Madison University played for 110 minutes and fought to a scoreless tie in Colonial Athletic Association action Friday evening at VCU’s Sports Backers Stadium.
The Rams (4-13-1, 2-8-1 CAA) had seven shots on goal, compared to five by the Dukes (9-5-3, 4-4-3 CAA). JMU held a 22-12 advantage in total shots.
Sophomore Andrew Dykstra (Woodbridge, Va.) (pictured) had five saves for VCU in recording his third shutout of the season and eighth of his career. Kevin Trapp registered seven saves for the Dukes.
VCU had four shots on goal in the first half and three in the second half, but none in overtime. JMU did not have a shot on goal in the first half, but had three in the second half and one in each overtime period.
Senior Nate Burkey (Alexandria, Va.) led the Rams with four shots and three shots on goal, including two in the second half. Junior Matthijs Maruanaya (Alkmaar, Netherlands) had three shots and two shots on goal. Both his shots on goal came in the first period.
Kurt Morsink had six shots and two shots on goal for the Dukes. Mark Totten had five shots and three shots on goal for JMU. Totten had a shot on goal in the first overtime period in the 91st minute and Morsink had another in the second overtime session in the 102nd minute.
JMU had a 10-1 advantage in corner kicks.
Both teams were nationally-ranked earlier in the season, but neither will participate in the upcoming CAA Tournament.

TOWSON, Md. – Junior Matthijs Maruanaya (Alkmaar, Netherlands) (pictured) scored in the second half, but it was not enough as Virginia Commonwealth University dropped a 2-1 decision to No. 20 Towson University Colonial Athletic Association Sunday afternoon at Towson Center Field.
The Rams (4-12-0, 2-7-0 CAA) had eight shots on goal, compared to seven by the Tigers (13-1-2, 9-0-1 CAA). Towson owned a 15-14 edge on shots. The Tigers have a nine-game winning streak and 11-game unbeaten streak.
The match was scoreless for the first 79 minutes. In the 80th minute, Sebastian Haensel nailed a shot from 18 yards out into the far right corner to give the Tigers a 1-0 advantage. It was Haensel’s sixth goal of the season. Towson extended its lead to 2-0 in the 84th minute as Kevin Ruck hit a shot from 15 yards out, his third goal of the fall.
Maruanaya scored 22 seconds after Ruck’s goal as he took a pass from senior Thomas Weingartner (Munich, Germany) and connected on a shot from 20 yards away to pull VCU to within one at 2-1.
Weingartner padded the Rams with five shots. Haensel led the Tigers with four shots.
Sophomore Andrew Dykstra (Woodbridge, Va.) had five saves for VCU. Greg Flaherty posted seven saves for Towson.
The Rams will conclude their season on Friday, Oct. 27, with a 7 p.m. home CAA contest with James Madison at VCU’s Sports Backers Stadium.
