12-8-05

RICHMOND, Va. – Former Virginia Commonwealth University standout Martin Ott defeated top-seeded Trevor Spracklin, 6-1, 3-6, 6-4, to capture the Smartbox Virginia State Indoor Singles title Wednesdy at the Country Club of Virginia.

With the third set knotted, 4-4, Ott won his service and claimed victory when Spracklin double-faulted.

For Ott, who entered as the second seed, it was his first appearance at the event. Ott also reached the doubles final, but he and partner Clint Greene fell to Spracklin and Carl Clark, 7-6, 6-1.

A native of Hungary, Ott played four years at VCU under head coach Paul Kostin, claiming seven Colonial Athletic Association titles, including for doubles victories.

Last season Ott posted an 11-7 record singles record for the Rams and teamed with current VCU player Arnaud Lecloerec to win the Colonial Athletic Association first doubles crown.
