VCU TENNIS TEAMS EARN TOP 15 PRESEASON RANKINGS
1-11-06

RICHMOND, Va. – The Virginia Commonwealth University Men’s and Women’s Tennis Teams, both coming off spectacular 2006 seasons, are ranked 14th and 13th, respectively, in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association’s (ITA) Preseason Poll, released this week.

The VCU Men return seven letterwinners, including a two-time All-America selection in senior Arnaud Le Cloerec (Plouhinec, France) , from their 2006 squad that finished 26-5 and received an identical No. 14 final ranking. Le Cloerec is currently ranked 15th nationally, by the ITA.

The Rams, directed by Head Coach Paul Kostin, won their 10th Colonial Athletic Association crown in 11 years and successfully reached the NCAA Tournament for the 14th straight spring. VCU defeated Richmond before falling to No. 21 Washington in the tournament’s second round.

On the women’s side, VCU enjoyed possibly its greatest season in 2006, opening the year with 29 consecutive wins to reach the NCAA Tournament Sweet 16. The Rams’ only loss of the season came to Southern California, which is ranked No. 3 in the preseason poll.

VCU welcomes back a stellar five-letterwinner class that includes All-Americans Tatsiana Uvarova (Minsk, Belarus) (2006) and Marianna Yuferova (St. Petersburg, Russia) (2005), as well as senior Olga Borisova (Minsk, Belarus), who went a perfect 24-0 in duel matches last year. Uvarova reached the NCAA Singles Quarterfinals in 2006 and finished with a No. 20 ranking. She is currently ranked 16th by the ITA.

In addition, the Black and Gold Women were selected to play in the USTA/ITA National Team Indoor Championships Feb. 1-4 in Madison, Wis.

The VCU Men kick off their season Jan. 19-21 when they host the annual VCU 4x1 Invitational at the Thalhimer Tennis Center. The Rams’ Women will follow suit with their own 4x1 Invite Jan. 26-28.

AMBERT THRASHES RIZZA, CAPTURES STATE INDOOR CROWN
12-14-06

RICHMOND, Va. - VCU Assistant Men's Tennis Coach Romain Ambert successfully handled former University of Virginia star Rylan Rizza, scoring a 6-3, 6-3 victory to win the State Indoor Singles Championship Wednesday at the Country Club of Virginia.

Ambert, in his second year with the Rams, earned $1,000 for the victory.

"I was just trying to be consistent, all the time," Ambert told the Richmond Times-Dispatch. "He has a big game, but like most of the players with big games, they are pretty inconsistent.

So I want to just show him some mental toughness and make him understand that it wasn't going to be fun to beat me. He was going to have to spend a long time on the court."

Ambert, who was rarely challenged in the match, fell behind, 2-0 in the second set, but rallied to take six of the last seven games on the way to victory.

Ambert, a two-time All-American at Mississippi State, fell in his bid to win both the singles and doubles trophies. He and former Ram Francesc Lleal dropped the doubles final to Carl Clark and Trevor Spraklin.

AMBERT DOUBLES UP, ADVANCES TO STATE FINALS
12-12-06

RICHMOND, Va. – Virginia Commonwealth University Assistant Men’s Tennis Coach Romain Ambert showed he’s still got something left in the tank, advancing to the finals of both the singles and doubles draws at the State Indoor Tennis Championships at the Country Club of Virginia Tuesday.

The second-seeded Ambert, a former two-time All-American at Mississippi State, toppled Trevor Spracklin with relative ease, 6-1, 6-1. He will meet former University of Virginia standout Rylan Rizza Wednesday at 6 p.m. in the singles final.

It was nearly an all-VCU championship match, but the top-seeded Rizza outlasted former Ram Francesc Lleal (pictured), 6-4, 3-6, 7-6 (2) in the other semifinal

VCU alum Marton Ott claimed the State Indoor Singles title last year.

Ambert also paired with Lleal to earn a berth in the doubles title match. Ambert and Lleal, who won 66 doubles stints during his collegiate career, downed Anthony Bresky and Nathan Crick, 7-5, 4-6, 6-4.

VCU’S LE CLOEREC RANKED 15TH IN SINGLES, 13TH IN DOUBLES

9-11-06
Full Rankings

RICHMOND, Va. – Virginia Commonwealth University senior Arnaud Le Cloerec (Plouhinec, France) (pictured) earned the No. 15 singles ranking in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association’s preseason poll.

Le Cloerec, a two-time All American, was 25-11 in singles action a year ago and finished the spring as the ITA’s 22nd ranked individual.

Additionally, Le Cloerec and senior Petr Olsak (Novy Jicin, Czech Republic) are slotted 13th nationally in the doubles preseason rankings. In the spring they finished ranked 48th after fashioning an 11-7 record.

WHAT IF? LE CLOEREC VS. AGASSI

9-6-06

Follow closely, this will be a bit academic.

In high school algebra, the Transitive Property of Inequality tells us that if A is greater than B, and B is greater than C, then A has to be greater then C.

So, using this logic, could VCU senior tennis star Arnaud Le Cloerec (pictured) beat Andre Agassi? Algebra says yes.

On March 5, 2005, Le Cloerec defeated Baylor’s Benjamin Becker in straight sets, 7-6 (4), 6-1. Becker, who went onto win the 2005 NCAA Men’s Singles title, eventually played his way into this year’s U.S. Open, where he closed out Agassi’s career in Sunday’s third round, 7-5, 6-7, 6-4, 7-5.

Mathematically speaking, If Le Cloerec (A) is greater than Becker (B), and Becker (B) is greater than Agassi (C)…

We’ll probably never know.

VCU WOMEN 12TH IN FINAL ITA POLL, MEN SLOTTED 14TH
Finish is Women’s Second Highest in Program History

RICHMOND, Va. – The Virginia Commonwealth University Men’s and Women’s Tennis Teams earned Top-15 spots in the final Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) poll following stellar seasons for both squads.

The VCU women finished 12th in the poll, which comes on the heels of a 29-1 season that concluded with a Sweet 16 appearance in the NCAA Tournament. It is the second best final ranking for a Rams’ team and the highest since 2003, when they earned the No. 9 spot.

There is reason for future optimism as well, as head coach Paul Kostin’s squad will not lose a single player to graduation.

On the men’s side, VCU concluded the year at No. 14, its best final ranking since 2000, when The Black and Gold were a national finalist and drew the No. 9 slot. This season the Rams fashioned a 26-5 mark, including a 16-match win streak, and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament.

Additionally, VCU lists just one senior among it’s eight regulars.
