RICHMOND, Va. – Virginia Commonwealth University sophomore outside hitter Ana Luiza Bernardes de Borja ( Florianopolis, Brazil) ripped 23 kills and hit .432 to spark the Rams to a 3-1 victory (30-20, 30-28, 28-30, 30-27) over Georgia State Friday in front of a raucous Ram Madness Crowd at the Alltel Pavilion.
VCU improves to 11-9 overall with the win, including 5-5 in the Colonial Athletic Association. GSU has lost six straight to fall to 6-14 overall and 3-7 in the conference.
De Borja made just four errors on the night in 44 attempts for the Rams, who hit .280 the match. In addition, de Borja picked up five total blocks, including two solos and recorded an ace.
Also for VCU, senior outside hitter Ludmila Francescatto (Fraiburga, Brazil) slammed home 19 kills and registered 12 digs and three aces, while sophomore setter Cat Juson (Long Beach, Calif.) set 53 assists and dug 11 balls.
Georgia State got 16 kills and 15 digs out of Ana Paula Ferreira, as well as 15 kills and six blocks from Leah Tenney.
The Black and Gold returns to action on Saturday, Oct. 14 at 7 p.m. at the Alltel Pavilion at the Stuart C. Siegel Center when it welcomes UNC Wilmington.
