FRANCESCATTO LEADS AS VCU CRUISES PAST UNCW, 3-0

RICHMOND, Va. – Senior outside hitter Ludmila Francescatto (Fraiburga, Brazil) registered 21 kills and a pair of aces to lead Virginia Commonwealth University to a 3-0 triumph (30-22, 30-19, 30-27) over UNC Wilmington Saturday at the Alltel Pavilion.
The win is VCU’s second straight and improves the Rams to 12-9 overall and 6-5 in the Colonial Athletic Association. The Black and Gold has defeated UNCW on six consecutive occasions, including twice in 2006. The Seahawks fall to 7-16 and 0-11 in the league. They have lost seven straight overall and 15 in a row in CAA play.
Francescatto, who leads the CAA in points per game, hit .444 for the match, making five errors in 36 attempts. She added five digs and two blocks.
The Rams out hit UNC Wilmington .369 to .172 in the match and out blocked the Seahawks, 6.5 to 3.0. VCU also had 111 hitting attempts, compared to UNCW’s 93.
Also for VCU, sophomore outside hitter Ana Luiza Bernardes de Borja (Florianopolis, Brazil) smashed 14 kills, hit .440 and registered 11 digs, while sophomore Elisa Kuehnel (Dresden, Germany) had nine kills and hit .750.
Liz Mitchell provided nine kills and Paula McConnell added eight for UNC Wilmington.
VCU returns to the floor on Friday, Oct. 20 when it travels to face CAA-leading Hofstra in Hempstead, N.Y. at 7 p.m.
