NEWARK, Del. – Two Virginia Commonwealth University moved up in the record books, but the Rams dropped a hard-fought, 3-1 decision (30-19, 33-31, 36-38, 30-19) to Delaware Saturday night.
The loss completes VCU’s regular season and evens its record at 14-14 overall. The Rams drop to 8-10 in the Colonial Athletic Association and will be the No. 6 seed in the conference tournament at Hofstra University Nov. 17-19. VCU will play either Towson or James Madison in the quarterfinal round Friday.
Senior Ludmila Francescatto (Fraiburga, Brazil) had 23 kills and 14 digs for the Rams, while fellow senior Melissa Peterson (Ganado, Ariz.) contributed 17 kills on a .357 hitting percentage and collected five blocks.
Francescatto’s performance gives her 874 career kills, vaulting her over Jonnie Stone (862) and Peyton Fleischer (871) and into fourth place on the Black and Gold’s career list.
Meanwhile, Peterson’s five blocks gave her 245 career rejections and slipped her past Lisa Szczerba (243) for fifth place in school history.
Colleen Walsh sparked Delaware with 27 kills on a .328 hitting percentage. She added seven blocks. Kelly Gibson kicked in 13 kills and 21 digs for the Fightin’ Blue Hens.
