PROVO, UTAH – Virginia Commonwealth University hit .352 for the match and three players registered double-digit kills in the Rams’ 3-0 rout (30-19, 30-15, 30-17) of Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Friday at the BYU Molten Classic.
VCU improved to 3-1 with the win, its final tuneup before meeting No. 4 Stanford and No. 26 BYU Saturday. TAMUCC is 1-3.
Sophomore outside hitter Ana Luiza Bernardes de Borja (Florianopolis, Brazil/Colegio Geracao) (pictured) enjoyed a solid all-around match with 11 kills (.364 hitting), nine digs, four blocks and two aces. Also for the Black and Gold, sophomore outside hitter Elisa Kuehnel (Dresden, Germany/Sportsgymnasium) slammed 11 kills and hit .667, while adding six blocks. Senior middle blocker Melissa Peterson (Ganado, Ariz./ Arizona Western College) kicked in 10 kills and three blocks while hitting .556.
VCU dominated in every facet of the contest, limiting the Islanders to -.030 hitting while out blocking A&M, 9.5-2.0. The Rams also served up seven aces, including three from sophomore outside hitter Natasha Franco (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Paulista), who was playing in her first match in a VCU uniform.
The Rams battle fourth-ranked Stanford on Saturday at 12 p.m., EST, and then clash with host-BYU at 9 p.m.
