RICHMOND, Va. – Virginia Commonwealth University sophomore Ana Luiza Bernardes de Borja (Florianopolis, Brazil/Colegio Geracao) had 18 kills, seven blocks and three aces, but it wasn’t enough to prevent Northeastern’s come-from-behind, 3-2 (24-30, 26-30, 30-27, 30-28, 16-14) victory Friday at the Alltel Pavilion at the Stuart C. Siegel Center.

VCU slips to 6-4 overall and 2-1 in Colonial Athletic Association play. NU improves to 3-6 and 1-1 in league contests. Northeastern’s win snaps the Rams’ seven-match winning streak against conference opponents.

Lauren DeTurk had 12 kills, while Kira Batura added 19 digs, nine kills and four blocks for the Huskies. No Northeastern player had more than 12 kills, but five had at least eight in a balanced attack. The Huskies hit .193 for the match, including a .281 mark in Game Three to start their comeback.

For the Rams, senior middle blocker Melissa Peterson (Ganado, Ariz./Arizona Western College) booked 13 kills on a .357 hitting percentage and added three blocks, while senior outside hitter Ludmila Francescatto (Fraiburga, Brazil/Arizona Western College) logged 18 kills, 18 digs and five assists. In addition, sophomore setter Cat Juson (Long Beach, Calif./Bush) dug a career-high 19 balls to go along with 37 assists.

VCU returns to action on Saturday, Sept. 16 when its hosts CAA-rival Hofstra at 7 p.m. at the Alltel Pavilion in a match-up of the league’s preseason No. 1 and No. 2.
