BROOKLYN, N.Y. – Seniors Melissa Peterson (Ganado, Ariz.) and Renata Salvatori (Londrina, Brazil) each had eight kills and eight blocks in Virginia Commonwealth University’s 3-0 (30-19, 30-9, 30-20) dismantling of Sacred Heart Saturday at the Blackbird Holiday Inn Challenge at Long Island University.
VCU finishes the tourney with a 2-1 mark and improves to 9-8 on the season. Sacred Heart drops to 1-15.
Four Rams contributed at least eight kills and the Black and Gold hit .337 for the match. Defensively, VCU registered 12.0 blocks and held the Pioneers to a .020 hitting percentage.
Peterson, who hit .333, also dropped in a career-high six service aces. VCU sophomore Ana Luiza Bernardes de Borja (Florianopolis, Brazil) (pictured) kicked in a match-best 11 kills, hitting .391, with five blocks and three aces. Sophomores Elisa Kuehnel (Dresden, Germany) and Natasha Franco (Sao Paulo, Brazil) added eight and seven kills, respectively.
Tiffany Phoenix led Sacred Heart with nine kills.
VCU returns home for its next match, when it welcomes 14-1 Delaware to the Alltel Pavilion at the Stuart C. Siegel Center on Friday, Oct. 6 at 7 p.m.
