TOWSON, Md. – Virginia Commonwealth University forward Krystal Vaughn ( Baltimore, Md./Lake Clifton-Eastern) led four Rams in double-figures with 19 points in a hard-fought, 74-68 loss to Towson Wednesday at the Towson Center.

VCU has lost seven of eight to slip to 7-7 overall and 0-4 in the Colonial Athletic Association. Towson improves to 11-3 and 2-2 in the conference.

Despite trailing by as many as 16 points, the Rams pulled to within four, at 70-66 on steal and layup by junior guard LaKea Jones (Fort Washington, Md./National Christian Academy) with 1:27 on the clock, the closest VCU had been since the 18:48 mark of the second half.

However, the Rams missed an opportunity to cut the lead further when Towson’s Kelly Robinson rebounded the second of two missed free throws by the Tigers’ Candace Davis and layed the ball in for a six-point margin with 1:06 remaining.

VCU would cut the lead to 72-68 after one free throw each by Jones and sophomore center Quanitra Hollingsworth ( Chesapeake, Va./Great Bridge), but could get no closer. A turnover on the Rams’ next possession, followed by a breakaway layup from Robinson to Shanae Baker-Brice with 10.2 seconds left sealed VCU’s fate.

Jones had season-highs of 11 points and seven assists for the Rams, while Hollingsworth added 12 points and eight rebounds.

Towson’s Holly Mahan led the Tigers with 17 points and 10 rebounds, while Robinston kicked in 16 and six rebounds.

The Rams got back in the game by shooting 61 percent (17-of-28) in the second half, but were haunted by 16-of-32 shooting at the free-throw line.

VCU returns home for its next contest, a Sunday, Jan. 14 battle with UNC Wilmington at the Alltel Pavilion at the Stuart C. Siegel Center.
