Box Score
TOLEDO, Ohio – Senior guard Michele Cosel ( Mechanicsville, Va./Atlee) (pictured) provided 11 points and three steals, but that wasn’t enough for Virginia Commonwealth University, which fell behind early and never recovered in a 76-50 loss to Toledo Saturday night at Savage Hall.
The Rams have lost three in a row to slip to 6-3. The Rockets, who avenged last year’s 71-50 VCU win in Richmond, Va., are 4-5.
Freshman forward D’Andra Moss ( Atlanta, Ga./Norcross) added nine points, sophomore center Quanitra Hollingsworth ( Chesapeake, Va./ Great Bridge) had eight points and 11 rebounds in 16 minutes and junior forward Krystal Vaughn (Baltimore, Md./Lake Clifton-Eastern) chipped in eight points and eight rebounds for VCU.
Danielle Bishop led four Rockets in double figures with 17 points. Diana Reindl kicked in 16 points and eight rebounds, while Nacole Stocks scored 15 points and handed out seven assists.
Toledo shot 47 percent (26-of-55) from the field in the game, compared to VCU’s 29 percent (17-of-58).
The Rockets opened the game with a 10-0 blitz, getting a pair of buckets out of Ta’Yani Clark and pushed the margin to 19-4 by the 14:15 mark. VCU struggled to get traction all half, due in part to 13 turnovers in the first 20 minutes. Bishop had 11 points in the opening period and Clark added 10 as UT took a 43-21 lead into the lockerroom and never looked back
VCU will have a 12-day break before heading to Boone, N.C. to battle Appalachian State Dec. 21 at 5 p.m.
