RAMS CONCLUDE SEASON IN THE SECOND ROUND OF NCAA TOURNEY

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The Virginia Commonwealth University women's soccer team finished their season as one of two teams to score more than one goal on the second-ranked North Carolina Tar Heels (22-1-0). However the Rams fell to the Tar Heels 6-2 in front of a crowd of 1,799 Sunday afternoon at Fetzer Field.

Freshman midfielder Stephanie Power (Dartmouth, Nova Scotia/ Dartmouth) scored the Rams‚ first goal in the 62nd minute when she beat a Carolina defender to the ball and fired a blast that landed in the wide open Carolina net. Power concluded the season as the Rams‚ leading scorer with ten goals.

VCU (13-5-5) appeared on the scoreboard once again in the second half when Sandra Anger (Cuguen, France/ Louis Bascan) (pictured) scored from directly in front of the box on a penalty kick. "This has been a great season," said Anger. "I'm sure the team will go even further in the future. I have no doubt about that."

The Rams just missed on several scoring opportunities. The first came 15 minutes into the contest when a cross by Pernilla Jansson (Enebyberg, Sweden/ Danderdys Gymnasium) went just over the head of senior Hedda Gardsjord (Oslo, Norway/ Mosjoen Videregaenda). Freshman Megan Flanagan (Franktown, Colo./ Ponderosa) also had a scoring opportunity in the first half. Her cross, which was meant for Jansson was stopped just short by the hand of Carolina goalkeeper Aly Winget.

The second-round match of the NCAA Women's Soccer Tournament was one of only two games all season in which the Rams gave up more than one goal. Senior forward Linsday Tarpley scored three of the Tar Heels' six goals. The Tar Heels had three goals in the first half and three in the second as well.

The Rams had a successful season, which included their second regular season conference title, record nine-game winning streak, the longest home unbeaten streak in the nation, as well as their second consecutive NCAA appearance.
