RICHMOND, Va.– Despite outshooting the Pride 22-13, the VCU Rams fell to second seeded Hofstra 1-0 in the title game of the CAA Women’s Soccer Championship Sunday afternoon at VCU’s Sports Backers Stadium. It was third-straight title game in three years for VCU, who won the 2004 CAA title.
VCU (12-4-5) had a 14-4 advantage in shots in the second half over the Pride (14-3-3). The defending champion Rams just missed on several quality scoring chances, including an eight-yard shot from the middle of the box by freshman Pernilla Jansson (Enebyberg, Sweden/ Danderdys Gymnasium) that banged off the right post with 1:35 remaining in regulation. Senior Sandra Anger (Cuguen, France/ Louis Bascan) and freshman midfielder Stephanie Power (Dartmouth, Nova Scotia/ Dartmouth) who both received All-CAA honors for their outstanding play during the season, had quality scoring opportunities as well.
VCU sophomore goalkeeper Lauren Hardison (Midlothian, Va./ Midlothian) had four saves for the Rams.
The loss ended the Rams’ 13-game unbeaten streak that dated back to Sept. 18 and also brought an end to the Rams’ 25-game home-unbeaten streak that dated back to Oct. 8, 2003.
The Rams, who played in their first NCAA Tournament in 2004, are hopeful of an at-large berth and will find out Monday afternoon. At least two CAA women’s soccer teams have made the NCAA Tournament in 10 of the past 12 seasons.
Freshman Edel Malone scored Hofstra’s lone goal of the game in the 10th minute.
Power, Samara Stephen-Dowd (Vienna, Va./ Oakton) and Hedda Gardsjord (Oslo, Norway/ Mosjoen Videregaenda) (pictured) represented VCU on the 2005 CAA Women’s Soccer All-Tournament Team.
