FAIRFAX, Va. – An early goal by sophomore Megan Flanagan (Franktown, Colo./Ponderosa) (pictured) was not enough for the VCU women’s soccer team as the George Mason Patriots defeated the Rams 2-1 in double overtime. The loss drops VCU to 11-4-2 overall and 7-2-0 in the CAA, while the Patriots improve to 7-9-1 overall and 4-5-0 in the conference.

The Rams jumped out early as Laure Dupont (Plessis Robinson, France) broke past a Mason defender on the left side and sent a beautiful cross pass to Flanagan who found the back of the net for an early 1-0 VCU advantage.

The game was tight throughout as the Black and Gold back line held the Patriots in check for most of the contest.

A penalty kick in the 79th minute of action gave Mason a chance to even the score at 1-1 as Rachel Wiggins squirted one past junior goaltender Lauren Hardison (Midlothian, Va./Clover Hill) to do just that.

The two teams held each other in check in the first overtime as there were just three shots taken by either team, but the Patriots came out aggressive in the second overtime. Mason had four shots in the second overtime and with 2:02 left in the contest, Rachel Wiggins found Kelly Keelan who deposited the game-winner as the Patriots topped the Rams, 2-1.

VCU is still without a win at George Mason Stadium as the Black and Gold are now 0-6 in Fairfax.

The Rams are back in action on Sunday, October 22 as they celebrate Senior Day at VCU’s Sports Backers Stadium. Game time is set for 2 p.m.
